The challenge

For most Malaysians, getting a second phone is harder than it should be: credit checks, paperwork, income checks, and forms that can take weeks. Compasia’s Renew+ removes all of that. A second phone needs only a MyKad.

Service films usually go one of two ways: a step-by-step explainer that informs but is easy to forget, or an emotional story that drifts away from the practical benefit. For Renew+ at CNY, the brief was a third way: honour the season, land the one-MyKad message clearly, and make it enjoyable to watch.

One actor, playing every character in the film.

The strategy

A classic comedy device

Every Malaysian family at CNY has its characters: the practical aunt, the suspicious uncle, the indecisive cousin, the patient parent. Each needs a phone for a different reason and trips over different paperwork.

Putting them all on screen, played by the same person, created an instant comedic frame. Each character meets Renew+ in their own way, with their own moment of “wait, just my MyKad?”, so the service message lands four times without ever repeating.

How we made it

  • Concept and scriptFour character moments, each with its own laugh and the same message
  • CastingOne actor with the range to make each character a person, not a costume
  • Character designCostume, hair, make-up and body language so each character reads instantly
  • Direction and cinematographyStaging that respects the one-actor idea, with no doubles or shortcuts
  • Post-productionEdit and finishing that keep the illusion and the comedy moving

The outcome

A paperwork message people remembered

The film made a frictionless paperwork message memorable in a season crowded with emotional brand films.

It landed Renew+ clearly, that a second phone really is as simple as showing a MyKad, and the four-character idea became a talking point people shared.

Got something like this coming up?
